Emergency Blood Coverage
 Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What is Emergency Blood Coverage?

A: Emergency Blood Coverage is a team that delivers blood products from hospitals in the area to Stamford Hospital Blood Bank.

Q: What is the time commitment to join the Emergency Blood Coverage?

A: There is no commitment!  A volunteer specifies the times that he/she is typically available.  If the volunteer is available at the time when needed, he/she will deliver the blood products.  If the volunteer is not available, Red Cross will find a replacement.

Q: How often is a volunteer called to complete a blood run?

A: This varies, but typically about once or twice a month.

Red Cross does not expect a volunteer to always be available on a moment’s notice.  A volunteer only delivers the blood products if he/she is available at the time.

Q: How long does a volunteer have to complete the pick up and delivery?

A: It varies on the circumstances.  For an emergency situation, a volunteer only has 30 minutes.  Other times, the volunteer may have up to 3 hours to complete the task.  Red Cross will advise on the sensitivity of time when it calls a volunteer.

In an emergency, the driver needs to leave to pick up the blood within 30 minutes of receiving the call.  (He doesn't have to complete the run in 30 minutes.

Q: When does a volunteer usually get called to deliver blood products?

A: A volunteer is only called during the daytime.  However, it could be weekdays or weekends, although it is rare to be called on the weekends.

Q: What are the routes of the run?

A: Typically, the run involves one of the following 4 locations: Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk, or Bridgeport.  A volunteer will drive to one of the 3 locations, and bring the container with blood product to Stamford Hospital Blood Bank.

Q: What qualifications does a volunteer need to posses for this?

A: A volunteer needs to own a car, and has a valid driver’s license.

Q: I have additional questions that are not addressed above.  Who should I call to get that information?

A: Please call Michelle Reynard at 230-363-1041, ext. 19.

Q: I am interested.  How do I sign up?

A: You can sign up by filling in our volunteer form or call Red Cross Darien/Stamford Chapter at 203-363-141, ext. 19.
