This local boy scout troop from Cloonan Middle School is
helping make a difference for Hurricane Katrina victims. Danny Abakmazov, Rhoda
Ponetract, Andrew Putzig, Diana Futyma, and Joshua Banks along with teacher
Julie Kazi, organized a popcorn sale and raised money to support the hurricane
relief efforts. The Red Cross presented them with awards for the
commitment and dedication to helping others.
Extraordinary Personal Action
Khiry T. Nelson was presented with an award for Extraordinary Action by the Stamford Chapter of the American Red Cross on Thursday, August 12th. Khiry accepted the award along with his 2 cousins and his Aunt Christine Miles.
At a 4th of July Family Reunion in South Carolina, 14 year-old Khiry Nelson was swimming at a hotel pool with his 11 year-old nephew. Khiry suddenly noticed that his cousin was flailing around in the pool and his head was barely above water. He was trying to take breaths but was swallowing water. Khiry immediately realized that his cousin was in trouble and took no hesitation in hurrying to help him. Khiry's aunt Christine said "We had no idea what was going on and we were all scared." Khiry grabbed his cousin and pulled him out of the pool.
Khiry's aunt and the Darien/Stamford Red Cross wanted to recognize this teenager's heroic effort by awarding him the
Extraordinary Personal Action award, a First Aid Kit and a Gift Certificate for a free CPR class.
Congratulations Khiry!
